For the past two weeks, nearly 30 members of Philipstown area departments- and beyond – congregated at the Cold Spring Fire Company No. 1 for a Rescue Technician Basic Class. This class, taught by NYS Certified Instructor Dan Valentine, provided an overview of the necessary basics of specialized rescue techniques, ranging from helicopter landings, repelling and lifting equipment, resources and victims up various inclines. The course was very hands on, and focused on the necessary rescue knots needed to package victims and secure rescue lines.
The Rescue Tech Basic class is one of the prerequisites for joining the newly formed Philipstown-wide rope rescue squad, a team of firefighters from different area departments that are receiving specialized training in rescue techniques. This team will be dispatched as part of the County wide mutual aid plan, and will respond to emergency situations that involve unique geographical terrain and/or circumstances throughout Philipstown.
There will be more updates about the team as they draw closer to being operational.
