DEPARTMENT CALENDAR

Cold Spring Junior Firefighter Academy (Day 3)

Today our recruits had lectures in what type of departments and companies make up the fire service, what different trucks are used (i.e. pumpers, tankers, ladders, etc.), and the personal protective equipment (PPE) that firefighters wear. This included a demonstration of the steps that a firefighter goes through upon responding to a fire call and explaining what each piece of equipment – from bunker gear to breathing apparatus (SCBA Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) – is used for and properly worn. In the afternoon the junior firefighters marched down to the waterfront were they got a hands on demonstration, taking charge and controlling live hose lines and spraying water into the Hudson.

The Cold Spring Fire Company in connection with the Town of Philipstown Recreation Department will be holding their 9th Annual Junior Firefighter Academy this week. Classes begin at 9am each day and end at 3pm.  So if you see a line of new recruits doing pushups on St. Mary’s lawn, or jogging up Main Street – honk your horn or give a wave!

CSFC Forcible Door Entry

Cold Spring Fire Company firefighters traveled to Garrison Fire Company on Tuesday night to utilize their forcible door entry simulator for a basic skills class. Firefighters learned the skills necessary to size-up and assess a locked or impeded door, look for other means of entry and as a last resort the skills needed to breakthrough a locked door using conventional firefighting tools (i.e. ax and Halligan tool).

*(Pictured are Cold Spring firefighters Peter Allen and Matt Hughes demonstrating a geared-down basic evolution of forcible entry).

Cold Spring Junior Firefighter Academy (Day 2)

Today our Junior Firefighters were joined by members of the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Rombout Fire Department and the Garrison Volunteer Fire Company.  Recruits were shown how to properly use a fire extinguisher, how to get out of a burning building and were introduced to Bonnie and Kura, two NYS Search and Rescue dogs.  In the afternoon, we were joined by Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance as recruits learned basic first aid and CPR.

In a very special event, a large piece of steel from the World Trade Center, on it’s way to a permanent home at the Manilus Fire Department near Syracuse, New York – made a stop at the Cold Spring Fire Company.  Members of the Manilus FD have been assisting CSFC Members in this year’s Academy in preparation of possibly starting their own off-shoot in their hometown.
