Today our recruits had lectures in what type of departments and companies make up the fire service, what different trucks are used (i.e. pumpers, tankers, ladders, etc.), and the personal protective equipment (PPE) that firefighters wear. This included a demonstration of the steps that a firefighter goes through upon responding to a fire call and explaining what each piece of equipment – from bunker gear to breathing apparatus (SCBA Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) – is used for and properly worn. They were then instructed in bicycle safety by the Village of Cold Spring Police. In the afternoon the junior firefighters marched down to the waterfront were they got a hands on demonstration, taking charge and controlling live hose lines and spraying water into the Hudson.
