Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Cold Spring Fire Company a paid department or volunteer?
We are 100% volunteer.
How old do I have to be to join the Fire Department?
You must be a minimum of 16 years of age to join.
I would like to help but I am not sure if I want to fight fires.
We have different types of membership. Junior membership is reserved for those members who are between 16 and 18 years of age. Once you reach the age of 18 you become a probationary firefighter. After you have completed your probationary period you become an Active firefighter. If you are a woman you may also join the Ladies Auxiliary.  You can also join the department as an associate member.

What do I have to do to join?
Fill out an application , find a member of the fire department to sponsor you and then get documentation from your Doctor stating you are physically fit to become a firefighter.

I work a lot, what is required of me once I join?

Once you become a member, you will go through an orientation program to familiarize you with the fire department.  The first Tuesday night of the month is a regular meeting, the other Tuesday nights are training nights. Tuesday night meetings and training start at 7:30pm unless otherwise specified.

Active members are required to annually attend a minimum of 3 meetings, 7 drills and receive no less than 25 points under the service award program.

Once I become a firefighter can I run into burning buildings?
Unfortunately no,  In your first year of membership you have to take the Firefighter 1 course. The course is approximately 72 hrs and is held at different times of the year. It is usually held 2 nights a week and occasional Saturdays. Besides taking that course you will also undergo department training on the use of self contained breathing apparatus, search and rescue techniques and initial attack.

Can I just be a driver?
That is also a possibility.  You still have to meet the requirements of a firefighter only you do not need to take the firefighter1 course.  Instead you must take a  Fire ground support course as well as emergency vehicle operator course and motorized pump operations.

What is required of Junior members?
Junior members have may rules that they must abide by. Must ride in the cab of the fire truck, must meet the same requirements as a probationary firefighter. There is also a curfew for Junior members. If you are placed on the ineligibility list at school you will be suspended from firehouse functions until your grades improve. We understand that junior members are involved in extra curricular activities and we encourage that! We can work around it.
