Volunteer rescue teams from North Highlands Fire Department and Cold Spring Fire Department were honored with the Putnam County Firefighters Association Fire Fighter of The Year award for their remarkable water rescues during Tropical Storm Irene. Nominated by former Putnam County Executive Paul Eldridge, these volunteers, who typically train for fires, automobile accidents and ice rescues, found themselves confronted with creeks that had become dangerous, raging rivers, trapping families in their homes. These men and women exhibited extraordinary bravery, determination, teamwork and dedication to their community during life-threatening situations.
Pictured above are the Cold Spring Fire Company honorees: (l to r, Chief Matt Steltz, Former Acting Putnam County Exec. Paul Eldridge, Firefighter Tom Wills, 3rd Lieutenant Anthony Ferrera, Firefighter Rich Tomlins, Captain Michael Wojtusiak and Firefighter/Driver Tom Valentine).
